Spotlight: Jessica Sernach

By Jennifer Logan

If you have attended a Hamlet meeting you may recognize and already know Jessica Sernach, as she’s the Secretary / Corresponding Secretary of the Hamlet of Beavercreek. As secretary, she is responsible for recording meeting minutes and submitting them to the County–including land use responses. She says that being involved in the Hamlet is “a great way to know more about what’s going on and what matters to my immediate community.”

As a newly married couple, Jessica and her husband Kenny wanted to upgrade from city apartment living to country living and decided to move to Beavercreek in 2011. Jessica loved that there were cows across the street and a yard where they might one day get a tractor to mow it. The convenience of the Beavercreek Saloon and grocery store were also a plus.

With the help of the Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation District, Jessica and Kenny were able to rid their property of invasives, replace them with natives, and build a natural landscape. They’ve gotten into composting as well, both to reduce waste and to repurpose food to “hopefully help our garden grow.” The couple is also expecting their first child, potentially looking for an au pair and definitely looking for help or ideas on how to fence their yard for dogs and kids!

Jessica loves hiking and kayaking as a great stress reliever. She feels safe knowing her neighbors, really likes the overall community feel we have, and would like to encourage people of different backgrounds to move to the area.

One of her favorite quotes is from Master Oogway in the Kung Fu Panda movie: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” And her personal quote is “If you can’t do it in the rain, you shouldn’t be living in Oregon.” Jessica, thank you for your service to the community!
